Knight Marshal Responsibilities

  1. Safety must be the primary concern of all marshals. If a safety problem arises through the rules, the Marshal must halt the activity until a safe way can be found to conduct the activity. If this happens, the Marshal In Charge of Event must report this as a serious problem, following the procedures defined in Problem Resolution section, including the nature of the conflict between rules and safety, the resolution at the event, and the other Marshals present.
  2. Marshals must enforce rules evenhandedly, regardless of the rank or affiliation of the individuals involved.
  3. Marshals must conduct themselves in a safe, courteous, and controlled fashion.
  4. In any contact discipline that includes projectile weapons, the marshals must wear protective eyewear that meets ANSI Z87 basic impact standards.
  5. Marshals are expected to contribute to the rules modification process by suggesting improvements or commenting on proposed changes to Policies and Conventions.

Rules of the List

  1. Each fighter, recognizing the possibilities of physical injury to themselves in such combat, shall assume unto themselves all risks and liability for harm suffered by means of such combat.
    • No fighter shall engage in combat unless and until they have inspected the field of combat and satisfied themselves tha is suitable for combat.
    • Other participants shall likewise recognize the risks involved in their presence on or near the field of combat and shall assume unto themselves the liabilities thereof.
  2. No person shall participate in Official Combat Related Activities outside of formal training sessions unless they have been properly authorized under Society and Kingdom procedures.
  3. All combatants shall adhere to the appropriate armor and weapons standards of the Society, and to any additional standards of the Kingdom in which the event takes place.
  4. Combatants shall conduct themselves in a Knightly and/or Chivalrous manner.
  5. Combat related activities with real metal, sharp or dull, weapons, whether fast or slow, is strictly forbidden at any Society event.

Conventions of Combat

General Information

  1. All traditional SCA armored combat at SCA tourneys, wars, and other events shall be conducted in accordance with the Rules of the Lists of the SCA, Inc.
  2. All Kingdoms shall have as their minimum armor and weapons standards those criteria established by the SCA minimums. Each kingdom may require additional, more extensive, and/or stricter standards.
  3. All fighters shall ensure that their armor and weapons are inspected by a warranted member of the kingdom marshallate.
  4. Each fighter shall accept full responsibility for the condition of his/her own equipment.
  5. Each fighter has the obligation to oneself, the marshals and opponents meet all of the present Kingdom and Society requirements. 

    Behavior on the Field

    1. Striking with excessive force is forbidden
    2. All fighters shall obey the commands of the marshals on the field or shall be removed from the field.
    3. Each fighter shall maintain control over their tempers at all times.
    4. Upon hearing “HOLD”, all combatants shall stop IMMEDIATELY!
    5. Fighters shall not participate in any SCA combat activity while impaired by alcohol or drugs including but not limited to: drugs prescribed by a licensed health care provider, over-the-counter medications, and illegal controlled substances.
    6. Any behavior that takes deliberate advantage of an opponent’s chivalry or safety-consciousness, or that takes deliberate unfair advantage of an opponent, is prohibited.
    7. Fighters shall not deliberately strike a helpless opponent.
    8. Fighters who obtain an unfair advantage by repeatedly becoming “helpless”, may (after being duly warned) be forced to yield the fight at the next occurrence of such behavior.
    9. Grappling, tripping, throwing, punching, kicking, and wrestling are prohibited.
    10. Deliberately striking an opponent’s head, limbs, or body with a shield, weapon haft or any part of the body is forbidden.
    11. Grasping an opponent’s person, shield, weapons surface or bow/crossbow is prohibited.
    12. Intentionally striking an opponent outside the legal target areas is forbidden.
    13. Intentionally striking a combat archer’s bow/crossbow is prohibited.

      Target Areas:

      7. Thighs

        Armor Requirements:

        1. Helm
        2. Neck Armor
        3. Kidney Protection
        4. Groin Protection
        5. Demi/Gauntlet
        6. Elbow Protection
        7. Knee Protection

          Weapons

          Single-Hand

          1. Rattan
            • Minimum . 1.25-inch tubular diameter
              • No cutting and/or smashing surface at both ends
          2. Thrusting tips:
            • same diameter of weapon shaft
            • at least .5inch of resilient foam
          3. Swords shall have
            • hand guard
            • basket hilt
            • quillons
            • gauntlets
          4. Total mass not to exceed 5 pounds (2.27 kg)

          Two-Handed Weapons

          1. Rattan
            • Minimum . 1.25-inch tubular diameter
            • Shall not be excessively flexible
            • No cutting and/or smashing surface at both ends
          2. Thrusting tips:
            • same diameter of weapon shaft
            • at least 1.5-Inch of resilient foam
            • Maximum 7.5-feet in length

            Spear

            1. Shall not have a cutting or smashing head
            2. Thrusting tip minimum 2-inches (50.8mm) diameter and 2-inches resilient material without allowing contact with the end.
            3. Rattan spears
              • minimum diameter of 1.25-inch 
            4. Fiberglass spears
              • Minimum 1.25-inches and no greater than 1.625.
              • End of shaft must be covered with a schedule-40 PVC cap.
              • shafts may be spliced using a fiberglass rod or tube.
              • Only two splices per shaft
            5. Length shall not exceed 9-feet.
